Like many other producers these days technology has allowed us to work completely in the digital domain and produce very high quality audio at a very reasonable price. I record through low noise interfaces in 24 bit/96 KH. My computer is an i7 Intel Window 7 platform with 32Gb of ram. My audio drive is a high speed SSD. This allows an unlimited number of tracks to capture performances. My main DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is Sonar which has all the tools to capture real audio and program midi instruments that most people would find hard to distinguish from the real thing.
Mixing is the process of combing all the recorded tracks to produce a song. It includes panning, reverb, EQing and other effects to make all the instruments form a cohesive song. I have a multitude of high quality plugins and use as many or as little as is required to get the effect I'm after.
Mastering is the process of fitting a number of songs together to make an album and making sonic enhancements and level adjustments to make sure that the songs work on any number of different listening systems. I use Wavelab to master with multiple quality plugins to achieve a high quality sound. I master my own work (I can imagine music purists facing contorting and frowning at this point!!) Today's technology does allow self mastering. It's just a matter of knowing how to use the tools and having a good ear.
There is a lot to be said for having someone different do the different stages of production but as with any creative process there is no right or wrong way to do it. Do whatever gets the best results.
